Investigating the Use of APIs in Academic Research

While working on my current project, I learned how useful APIs can be for acquiring, evaluating, and integrating data from many sources. In fact, while I seek help with my dissertation, I've been experimenting with APIs to automate data collecting and increase the accuracy of my findings. Has anyone here attempted using APIs for academic or research purposes, and if so, what problems or benefits did you face?
